Singapore combines strong institutions, regulated providers and no general capital gains tax. If a person purchased bitcoin as an investment and sells it without developing a business, the gain may not be subject to income tax.
The problem is arriving and staying. There is no simple passive residence to maintain assets: the Global Investor Program requires a relevant track record. If the sale becomes a trade, business, profession or vocation, the personal rate reaches 24%. That’s why it ranks sixth.
This guide is part of the comparison of the 10 best countries to live with assets in bitcoin. Before executing a sale, it is also advisable to review how to change tax residence before selling bitcoin.
Verdict
Singapore is great for a long-term investor who already has a real immigration pipeline and can prove that their BTC is capital, not inventory of a business. It also fits founders, entrepreneurs or heads of a family office who meet the requirements of the Global Investor Programme.
It is not the option for a professional trader looking for 0% or for someone waiting for residency to show a wallet.
Ideal profile
- BTC holder with years of holding, few operations and own funds.
- Professional who obtains an Employment Pass for a real job and actually lives in Singapore.
- Founder or entrepreneur with sufficient history and volume for the GIP.
- Family office capable of meeting substance requirements.
- Person who prioritizes legal security and services and assumes a high cost.
Unsuitable profile
- Person who only has BTC and does not meet an immigration category.
- Day trader who intends to classify all his trading as personal investment.
- Holder who cannot reconstruct the origin of funds or control of wallets.
- Family that has not assessed the rules for renewal of permanent residence and, where applicable, the National Service obligations of male children included as dependents.
bitcoin tax table
| Activity | Prudent treatment as of August 9, 2026 | Decisive nuance |
|---|---|---|
| Hold BTC | There is no tax for mere possession | Proof of cost and ownership must be retained |
| Occasional sale | Generally not taxable if BTC is personal investment/equity | Intention and facts prevail over label |
| Swap or payment with BTC | The disposal can be capital or revenue; Receiving tokens for goods, services or employment generates income according to their nature | There is no universal exemption for every payment or exchange |
| Professional trading | Taxable as trade/business/profession/vocation; resident rates up to 24% | Frequency, intention, financing, tenure and organization |
| Individual mining as a hobby | IRAS initially presumes a hobby: the gain on selling mined tokens is treated as a non-taxable capital gain | It is taxable if there is habitual and systematic effort to profit |
| Mining for clients | Service fee is taxable | It is not confused with mining for oneself |
| Staking/lending/yield | There is no specific official treatment sufficient to affirm 0% in all cases | Analyze contract, source, habituality and nature of business |
| Wealth | There is no general annual tax on net worth | There are property taxes and duties, GST and consumption costs |
The basic rule: personal investment versus business income
The IRAS page on selling property, shares and financial instruments, updated on February 27, 2026, expressly includes the digital tokens. It indicates that profits or losses from buying and selling stocks or other financial instruments are generally considered personal investments.
Singapore does not levy a separate capital gains tax, but a gain can be income if it comes from trading. IRAS assesses frequency, intent, tenure, financing, debt, and organization. There is no deadline or number of operations that guarantees the result: the more systematic and commercial the behavior, the greater the risk.
Sale, exchange and payments with bitcoin
The IRAS guide on digital tokens part of the nature and use of the token, not its name. The purchase of a payment token is not in itself a taxable event, but the intention in acquiring it helps determine the treatment of its subsequent disposition.
If a company receives BTC for goods or services, it recognizes the value of barter. If an employee earns in BTC, there is employment income. These are different rules from selling a personal investment.
A swap or payment means having a position. There is no rule that declares all private swaps neutral; It is advisable to record value, cost, date and purpose of each batch.
For GST purposes, since 2020 the exchange of digital payment tokens for fiat currency or other DPTs is treated as an exempt transaction in the cases defined by IRAS. That GST rule does not decide the income tax of the investor or trader.
Trading: how much a person can pay
When the profits come from a taxable activity, the resident applies the general scale. From the Year of Assessment 2024, the maximum rate is 24% for taxable income above S$1 million. The current IRAS table is progressive: the 24% is not applied to all income.
The qualification affects expenses and losses: the business can analyze deductible expenses; A capital loss is therefore not a business deduction. Separating wallets helps proof, but does not obligate IRAS.
Mining: A Surprisingly Clear Guide
IRAS distinguishes the individual who mines as a hobby from the individual who exercises the vocation of a miner. The initial position for a person is that mining is done as a hobby. In that scenario, the profit from selling mined payment tokens is treated as capital and is not taxed; In exchange, mining costs are not deductible.
If there is a habitual and systematic effort to profit, there may be a vocation and the sale will be taxable. Installation, reinvestment, planning and dedication are cues, not automatic rules.
If the miner provides the service to a customer and charges a fee, that fee is taxable. For a corporation, IRAS generally considers mining to be organized for profit and applies business rules.
Staking, lending and yield on BTC
The official guide does not close personal staking nor does it allow the presumption of hobby to be extrapolated. Bitcoin does not use proof-of-stake: its “yield” usually comes from lending, a platform or a wrapped token and can be interest, distribution, service or business depending on the contract. For relevant amounts it is advisable to obtain prior criteria.
Relevant changes between 2023 and 2026
24% maximum personal rate
From YA2024, the top resident rate rose from 22% to 24% for taxable income exceeding S$1 million. It affects the professional trader, not a profit that retains the character of capital.
Token Guide Updated January 2026
IRAS updated the e-Tax Guide on January 30, 2026 through renumbering and editorial changes. It did not create a new crypto exemption: the capital/revenue distinction already existed.
Greater formalization of the regulated ecosystem
MAS oversees DPT services and maintains a public directory. The license does not guarantee solvency, full protection or bank acceptance.
GIP and application fee
The Economic Development Board raised the application fee for the Global Investor Program to S$20,000 from May 5, 2025. The current program requires investment and track record, not just liquid assets.
Tax residence
A foreigner is generally tax resident for a Year of Assessment if they stayed or worked in Singapore for at least 183 days during the previous calendar year. IRAS also includes rules for continuous presence for three years and for certain periods of employment that span two years and add up to at least 183 days. This last concession does not apply to all profiles, such as directors or independent professionals.
Without local employment, the conservative criterion is real presence of 183 days, housing and ordinary life. Immigration residence does not replace the fiscal analysis nor does it eliminate that of the previous country.
If a person sells BTC after moving from Spain, they must coordinate the Spanish calendar year, the Singapore tax period, the agreement and the date of the sale. Depositing into a Singapore account does not by itself displace a gain made while you were still a resident of another State.
Migratory routes
Global Investor Program
The GIP of the Economic Development Board grants Permanent Resident status to eligible investors with relevant business history. The factsheet updated May 5, 2025 establishes demanding profiles and options.
Among the current criteria:
- An established business owner needs at least three years of experience and a company with annual turnover of at least S$200 million in the previous year and as an average of the previous three years, in addition to participation and eligible sector;
- A lead family office needs five years of business, investment or management experience and at least S$200 million of net investable assets;
- Option A requires investing at least S$10 million in a new or expanded business in Singapore and participating in its management;
- Option B calls for S$25 million in a fund selected by GIP;
- Option C requires a single family office in Singapore with minimum AUM of S$200 million and at least S$50 million transferred and deployed in specified investments.
The GIP does not declare BTC an eligible investment. EDB maintains criteria on net investible assets and each option is delimited: it must be consulted how it will value crypto assets.
Renewal of the Re-Entry Permit requires maintaining economic conditions and/or residence in accordance with the option. Including male children in the PR may trigger National Service obligations, a family point that should be reviewed before applying.
EntrePass, Employment Pass and technological profiles
The EntrePass requires a venture-backed or innovative company; the Employment Pass, real employment; and Tech.Pass, experience and thresholds. None of them is a visa for a passive bitcoin holder. The route must correspond to authentic activity.
Banking, sales and KYC
Singapore has sophisticated banks and regulated DPT providers, but applies strict AML controls. For a large cash-out it is advisable:
- use an entity listed in the MAS directory and verify the exact scope of its license;
- confirm in advance with the receiving bank whether it supports the flow;
- preserve CSV, statements, hashes and wallet map;
- prove cost, source of purchase and previous residence;
- identify mining, inheritances, donations or remunerations;
- conduct an operational test before the main sale;
- Do not divide transfers with the purpose of avoiding controls.
An exchange license does not obligate the bank to accept funds. A seed phrase or private key should not be provided either: control of an address can be proven using secure methods agreed upon with the entity.
Cautious Numerical Examples
Selling a personal investment
One person bought BTC for S$150,000 in 2018, kept it in self-custody and sells a portion for S$2 million after actually becoming a resident of Singapore. It does not carry out other operations and can document the investment intention. If the gain remains capital in nature, Singapore does not subject it to income tax.
It is not a safe harbor. An inspection could assess other facts, and the country of departure may have the right to tax if the move was not completed.
Trader with S$1.2 million of taxable income
If a resident person obtains S$1.2 million of total taxable income from a trading business, the current table produces, before rebuttals or particular circumstances:
- accumulated tax on the first S$1 million: S$199,150;
- 24% on the following S$200,000: S$48,000;
- indicative total: S$247,150.
The example shows why “Singapore does not have capital gains tax” is insufficient if the activity is business.
Individual miner
A hobbyist mines BTC on a limited basis and sells the tokens for S$30,000. Under the initial presumption of hobby, the profit is capital and the costs are not deductible. If you operate a systematic farm for profit purposes, the result may be taxable income.
Checklist
- Confirm a migration route before planning the sale.
- Analyze each lot and document intent, cost and ownership.
- Separate personal investment from any crypto business.
- Spend the necessary days and move the real center of life.
- Obtain tax proof and review agreement and previous departure.
- Consult in writing the treatment of staking or yield material.
- Choose DPT provider in the MAS directory.
- Prevalidate the cash-out and prepare source of wealth/source of funds.
- Submit declarations even if the result is zero if a formal obligation requires it.
Main risks
- Not obtaining or not renewing the residence: Heritage alone is not enough for GIP.
- Reclassification as a trader: eliminates 0% equity and can lead to 24%.
- Staking without specific rule: It is not responsible to promise exemption.
- Source of income: physically operating from Singapore can connect the business with Singapore.
- Intensive KYC: an incomplete on-chain history can temporarily block a legitimate cash-out.
- High total cost: housing, education and family office structure can outweigh the tax savings.
- Previous residence not extinguished: a Singapore PR does not neutralize a home country inspection.
Conclusion
A long-term holder with legitimate residence, traceable purchases and few dispositions can benefit from the absence of capital gains tax. Its strength is predictability.
For the trader, professional miner or user of performance products, the analysis changes: the income can enter the range of up to 24%. And for the purely passive holder, the true filter is immigration. Before choosing Singapore, you must first decide how you are going to live legally there; Then, how the sale will be classified.
