Living in the Bahamas with bitcoin in 2026: taxes, residency and exchange controls

Ilustración editorial para la guía sobre bitcoin, impuestos y residencia en Bahamas.

The Bahamas does not have an internal personal income tax. For an individual selling their own bitcoin, this can mean 0% local. It does not equate to the absence of obligations: there may be a business license, digital asset regulation, VAT, property taxes, exchange controls and banking KYC.

The country ranks eighth in this series because it combines very favorable personal taxation, the English language, proximity to the United States, and a specific framework for digital assets. It falls behind other destinations due to the island’s cost of living, a smaller financial market, exposure to hurricanes and a residence that does not by itself resolve either the right to work or the tax exit from the previous country.

This guide is part of the comparison of the 10 best countries to live with assets in bitcoin. Before making a sale, it is also a good idea to review how to change tax residence before selling bitcoin.

Verdict

The Bahamas is a very favorable option for a holder who actually lives in the archipelago and sells his or her own assets, but requires more banking and exchange planning than its “zero tax” message suggests. The Bahamas Treasury Department confirms that the country does not have an internal personal income tax regime.

This local result does not eliminate possible taxation in the State of origin. The sale must be scheduled after an effective and creditable tax departure, not just after obtaining a Bahamian residency card.

Ideal profile

  • Long-term holder who occasionally sells BTC from his own assets.
  • Person with foreign capital who can bear a high cost of living.
  • Investor willing to maintain complete records of purchases, wallets, exchanges and bank transfers.
  • Applicant with the ability to buy or rent housing and build a real presence in the Bahamas.
  • Family that values English, climate and proximity to North America.

Unsuitable profile

  • Trader who intends to call “personal investment” an organized daily operation.
  • Person who needs a broad labor market or who assumes that a residence permit automatically authorizes work.
  • Holder with opaque history, mixers, wallets without traceability or impossibility of demonstrating the acquisition cost.
  • Who needs to convert large amounts immediately without having previously agreed on the process with a bank and regulated provider.
  • Taxpayer who maintains housing, family and economic center in his or her country of origin and relies only on a Bahamian permit.

Tax table for a natural person

Operation Indicative local treatment in 2026 Critical point
Hold BTC Without personal income tax and without general annual tax on financial assets Housing can generate real estate tax
Occasional sale of own BTC No personal income tax Confirm that it is not a business activity and review the country of departure
Swap BTC for another crypto asset No personal income tax under the current domestic regime Maintain valuation and traceability; a systematic succession can be business
Payment for goods or services with BTC No personal tax on a capital gain of the payer The good or service may carry VAT; the merchant has his own obligations
Regular trading on your own account There is no personal income tax, but a license and Business License Tax may be required. Ranking and proprietary trading turnover must be validated
Mining or staking services No personal income tax, but a commercial operation can be regulated and licensed DARE 2024, business license, VAT and right to work can intervene
Wealth Without general tax on financial wealth There are real estate taxes, inheritance or corporate fees and costs depending on the structure.

The table describes the Bahamian framework, not the overall result. A person still tax resident in Spain, Argentina, Mexico or another country can pay taxes there even if the bank account or property is in the Bahamas.

What 0% Personal Really Means

The absence of a personal income tax makes unnecessary, in many particular cases, the discussion that other countries maintain between capital gains and income. But it does not make all activity private. The Business License Act 2023 requires a license from those who operate a business and establishes charges calculated according to category and volume.

For proprietary trading, the law provides for a fee equal to the greater of 15,000 Bahamian dollars or 0.25% of the income derived from that trading, with a maximum of 100,000. The relevant accounting definition should not be replaced by the gross value of all unadvised purchases and sales: the official guide to financial services entities refers to investment profits from own operations.

An individual who rebalances his portfolio once is not automatically a business. Nor is there a number of operations or days of holding that guarantees classification in the reviewed sources. Frequency, organization, financing, provision to third parties and way of presenting itself to the market are facts that should be documented.

Holding, sales, swaps and payments

Holding private keys or BTC in escrow does not itself generate personal tax. An occasional sale is also not subject to local personal income tax, because that tax does not exist. It is prudent to prepare a file before the cash-out: date and cost of each purchase, exchange statements, own addresses, movements between wallets and explanation of any coinjoin, loan or third-party transfer.

In a swap or payment with BTC, the personal result continues to benefit from the absence of personal income tax. However, recording the market value preserves traceability and allows the bank or authority of the previous country to respond. If a service is paid, the Bahamian VAT can be applied to commercial operations even if the means of payment is bitcoin.

Trading, mining and staking

The self-employed trader must analyze whether he operates a business and needs a business license. If you manage other people’s funds, custody assets, administer a platform, advise or provide other services, you also enter a different regulatory terrain.

The Digital Assets and Registered Exchanges Act 2024, known as DARE 2024, expanded oversight of exchanges, custody, management, advisory and certain staking services. The Securities Commission maintains the legislative framework and a registered entities search engine. The law also regulates certain proof-of-work mining activities. Without reading the specific authorization, it should not be deduced that all domestic mining is permitted or prohibited.

Bitcoin does not have native staking. If the holder obtains returns by lending BTC, providing liquidity, using a representative token or delivering assets to a provider, legally it is not “Bitcoin staking” in the strict sense. The absence of personal income tax does not eliminate counterparty risk nor does it make the supplier authorized.

Relevant changes between 2023 and 2026

  • 2023: The Business License Act updated the business licensing and fee regime. Since then, saying that the Bahamas is “tax free” without separating private assets from business is especially imprecise.
  • 2024: DARE 2024 replaced and expanded the 2020 framework for digital asset services. The reform reinforced custody, conflicts, staking and other activities after the sector’s reputational problems.
  • 2024: The Central Bank relaxed certain exchange control limits, but did not eliminate the system. The official note introduced measures with effect in April and June 2024.
  • From January 1, 2025: The immigration reform published for economic permanent residence raised the qualified investment to 1 million Bahamian dollars and requires maintaining it for at least ten years.
  • Until August 9, 2026: There continues to be no general domestic tax on personal income. That has not eliminated VAT, property tax, licenses or financial regulation.

Tax residence: the file matters more than the label

Since there is no domestic personal income tax, the priority is to demonstrate to the country being abandoned that the move is real. A Bahamian permit helps, but is rarely enough.

It is advisable to keep passport and travel records, housing contract or title, bills, health insurance, bank accounts, ordinary expenses and evidence that family and daily life have moved. If the previous country applies a 183-day, center of interest, permanent home or family test, you must comply with that test and any exit rule or expatriation tax.

A guide from the Bahamian Treasury on a friendly procedure with Japan uses domicile, permission to reside and criteria for permanent residence, center of interests and habitual stay. It is useful evidence of how links are analyzed in that context, but It is not a universal tax residency rule for all countries or treaties..

Migratory routes

Economic permanent residence

The Immigration (Amendment) Act 2024, with scheduled entry on January 1, 2025, establishes a minimum investment of 1 million Bahamian dollars in real estate or zero-coupon bonds from the Central Bank and a minimum tenure of ten years. The standard requires purchase documentation, taxes and valuation; a donation does not serve as a qualified investment. As the official PDF is hosted in a route called “Bills”, before transferring funds, the current text, its application and current rates must be confirmed with Immigration.

Annual permit and owner card

There is a permission to reside renewable and a homeowners card. The forms request housing, solvency, background, health and source of income. Figures printed on old forms may not be current: ask Immigration for the current table before submitting.

Right to work

Residence and work are not synonyms. The Immigration (General) Regulations prevent the holder of a residential permit from carrying out a paid occupation without work authorization. A permanent residence must also include the corresponding right or be complemented by the necessary permit. A trader, miner or active manager should obtain an immigration opinion before operating from the islands.

Banking, cash-out, KYC and exchange control

The Bahamas maintains exchange controls administered by the Central Bank. The immigration permit does not automatically determine the exchange status or the type of account. The Central Bank explains its change control objectives and has specific rules for Resident investments in foreign currency assets.

Before selling a large position, the holder should obtain in writing from the bank or legal dealer which account to use, what documents to provide, and whether the move requires approval. There is no basis to claim that all Bahamian banks accept crypto funds. The decision will be individual and will depend on the provider, jurisdiction of the exchange, history of the coins and patrimonial origin.

The file usually includes identification, residence, previous statements, acquisition history, proof of wallet control, inheritances or donations, and exchange statements. Using a registered entity does not guarantee that the bank will accept the transfer.

Cautious Numerical Examples

Private holder. Ana bought BTC for $100,000 and, after effectively moving her residence, sells it for $2 million. Bahamas does not apply personal tax on the profit of 1.9 million. The result may change if the previous country still considers you a resident, applies an exit rule or attributes the sale to a previous period.

Business trading. An activity correctly classified as proprietary trading earns 4 million Bahamian dollars of relevant income according to the legal definition. 0.25% would be 10,000, so the minimum of 15,000 would operate. With 20 million, the simplified calculation would be 50,000. These examples do not determine which items make up the turnover nor do they replace an official license or settlement.

Buy with BTC. Luis pays for a service valued at 25,000 with bitcoin. Bahamian personal income tax does not arise due to the appreciation of its currencies, but the supplier can charge VAT and the supplier’s bank can request traceability. Luis retains the value and TXID of the transaction for his country of origin and future proof of funds.

Checklist before moving and selling

  1. Confirm in writing the date of loss of residence and the rules for leaving the current country.
  2. Choose an immigration route and check requirements, fees, right to work and current times.
  3. Clarify with the bank the exchange control condition and the necessary accounts.
  4. Reconstruct cost, dates and on-chain route of all BTC before requesting onboarding.
  5. Decide if the activity is wealth management or business; apply for licenses if applicable.
  6. Use a registered provider and agree on limits, currency and cash-out sequence.
  7. Sell only when the new tax and banking situation is documented.
  8. Maintain housing, presence and evidence of ordinary life during the relevant years.
  9. Review will, key custody, home insurance and hurricane plan.

Risks that can change the decision

  • Country of departure: It is possible to owe taxes outside of the Bahamas despite the local 0%.
  • Business classification: Organized trading, mining or services can activate license, fees, VAT and supervision.
  • Change control: exchange residency and authorized accounts must be planned before the cash-out.
  • Banking: A wallet without traceability can block or delay the receipt of fiat.
  • Migration: Buying a property does not in itself guarantee residence, work or success of an application.
  • Cost and climate: Imports, insurance, specialized health and exposure to hurricanes raise the real cost.
  • Regulation: DARE 2024 reinforces the framework, but requires verification that any provider and service is authorized.

Conclusion

Bahamas offers a clean personal tax outcome: a holder can hold, sell or spend BTC without local income or gain tax. It works better for documented private wealth than for intensive commercial activity.

The strategy requires finishing the previous residence, obtaining a real stay, agreeing on the banking and exchange circuit and separating own investment from business. If a piece fails, 0% can end in an expensive move or a blocked cash-out.
